Bladensburg to Implement Stop Sign Cameras at Intersections with Elevated Stop-Sign Violation Rates; 15-Day Warning Phase Starts

BLADENSBURG, MD, UNITED STATES, September 17, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The Town of Bladensburg is utilizing stop sign automated enforcement to better protect motorists and pedestrians by deploying the technology from NovoaGlobal^® at intersections where failure to stop remains a persistent safety concern.

This safety initiative is officially authorized under the Bladensburg Town Council’s passage of Ordinance 13-2025, which adds Section 112-14 to the Town Code. Furthermore, the program strictly adheres to Maryland Transportation Article §21-707.1, which mandates that drivers must come to a complete, full stop at the stop line, crosswalk, or before entering the intersection.

Located along the Anacostia River in Prince George’s County, just northeast of Washington, D.C., the Town of Bladensburg has a rich history dating back to the 1720s. Today, protecting its nearly 10,000 residents is a primary focus.

“The overall goal of our Stop Sign Camera Enforcement Program is to reduce the number of fatalities, serious injuries, and property damage resulting from traffic collisions,” stated Interim Chief Daniel Frishkorn from the Bladensburg Police Department. “By implementing this technology, we aim to improve the safety of motorists and pedestrians at these specific locations, while increasing town-wide awareness through coordinated outreach and education.”

Enforcement Locations
The program will monitor key intersections that experience significant traffic compliance and safety issues. The initial deployment includes the following locations:
• 57th Ave @ 58th Ave, Northbound
• Tilden Rd @ 53rd Pl, Eastbound
• 57th Ave @ Emerson St, North Intersection, Westbound

Implementation Timeline
To ensure the community is well-informed and has sufficient time to adjust driving habits before monetary penalties are issued, the program will follow a phased rollout:

• Warning Period (Phase 1): 15-Day Warning Phase Begins. For 15 days, violators who fail to make a complete stop will receive a notice via mail stamped "WARNING" with no monetary penalty.
• Full Activation (Phase 2): Starts 15 Days AFTER Warning Phase. Citations with associated fines will be officially issued for violations recorded on or after this date.

Civil Penalty Structure
Violating the law—such as performing a "rolling stop" or failing to stop completely before the crosswalk or intersection line—results in a civil penalty. Under Maryland law, these citations are issued to the registered vehicle owner. They do not assess points on your driver's license, nor are they reported to insurance companies.

Failure to Stop / Rolling Stop violations captured by automated cameras will be subject to a $40.00 fine.

Commitment to Fairness and Integrity
To maintain program integrity and public trust, all potential violations recorded by the system will be individually reviewed and verified by an authorized official before a citation is mailed to the registered vehicle owner. Furthermore, enforcement zones will feature highly visible regulatory signage alerting motorists to the presence of automated stop-sign cameras.
