The International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) will honor Dr. Erika Wichro at their Annual Awards Gala in NYC at the Plaza Hotel

NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, September 15, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Preparedness that works when pressure exceeds plans

Dr. Erika Wichro, MPH, MA, MAS, a medical doctor and senior global health and crisis governance expert, has been selected as Top International Crisis Governance Expert of the Year 2026 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP). This prestigious distinction recognizes her exceptional leadership and work helping health leaders and organizations turn complex challenges into practical action while keeping people at the heart of the response.

While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a select number of distinguished professionals are chosen for IAOTP’s prestigious annual honors. Dr. Wichro is being recognized for her decades of experience across public health, humanitarian response, emergency management, and international crisis governance, as well as her ability to strengthen systems, foster collaboration, and lead effectively in some of the world’s most complex environments. She will formally accept this distinguished award at IAOTP’s Annual Awards Gala at the iconic Plaza Hotel in New York City in December 2026. IAOTP is honored to recognize Dr. Wichro for her extraordinary career, continued leadership, and lasting contributions to global health and crisis governance.

Across more than 35 years in health, including over 20 years in emergency preparedness and response, Dr. Wichro’s career has brought her close to both the human consequences of crises and the decisions that shape them. Her clinical, operational, strategic and research experience connects the realities of frontline care with the responsibilities of leadership. Through this work, she has remained committed to helping people and institutions build the capacity to act when uncertainty is high and the stakes are personal.

That commitment has taken her from outbreak response in conflict-affected settings to pandemic preparedness in Austria and regional health systems assessments. For WHO in Pakistan, she established a functional provincial rapid response unit connecting surveillance with investigation and follow-up. As technical lead for the World Bank-funded South Asia surge capacity assessment through Oxford Policy Management, she helped examine how countries could strengthen their readiness. Together, these experiences inform an approach that considers how decisions will work in practice, who will carry them forward and what support they need.

For Dr. Wichro, this begins with listening. Understanding the priorities of leaders, colleagues and communities is integral to identifying what needs to change and what can already be built upon. She combines candid advice with compassion and respect, working alongside people to clarify priorities, strengthen coordination and develop solutions they can put into practice. Her aim is for those she supports to feel heard, recognize their own capabilities and move forward with greater confidence.

This connection between human experience and institutional responsibility also shapes her leadership development work. Through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism’s team leadership training and her leadership of its Diversity and Inclusion Working Group, she contributes to how teams communicate, collaborate and lead under pressure. Her work with the International Organization for Migration and Global Emergency Group extends that commitment to leadership capacity and staff wellbeing, recognizing that effective response depends on the conditions in which people are expected to perform.

Bringing these perspectives together, Dr. Wichro has developed the 6M Leadership Architecture for Polycrises — Money, Mandates, Metrics, Meaning, Mechanisms and Memory. The framework helps leaders examine whether resources, authority, evidence, trust, coordination and learning reinforce one another when pressures overlap. It gives practical expression to the purpose running through her work: preparedness that works when pressure exceeds plans.

Her postgraduate qualifications in public health, applied ethics and international law in armed conflicts complement her medical background, while research at Biobank Graz, publications and independent reviews inform the evidence and ethical reflection she brings to complex challenges. Underlying this breadth is a consistent professional outlook: courage to address difficult questions, curiosity to understand different perspectives, compassion and a belief in human potential across the globe.

The 2026 award follows earlier IAOTP honors, including the Presidential Award in Public Health in 2024 and Top Inspirational Leader in Health in 2025. It recognizes a career devoted to helping people and institutions prepare, respond and learn together.

Dr. Wichro welcomes conversations with leaders and organizations seeking to strengthen emergency preparedness, crisis governance, health systems resilience and leadership capacity. Her focus is on understanding their priorities and working with them to turn the next challenge into a practical way forward.
